Summarizing our study of the eye, we dissected COW EYEBALLS!
I must admit it was strange to hear myself on the phone with the butcher shop,
"I'd like to order 4 eyeballs, please."
The woman on the phone acted as naturally as if I was making a reservation at Olive Garden.
A little squeemish at first....
...but then enthralled as we discovered all the eyeball parts we had memorized. The most amazing part was the tapetum; a colorful, reflective layer on the back of animal eyes. This is why their eyes seems to glow when car headlights shine on them.
However, Madeline put her foot down the following week when I suggested we could dig the ear bones out of the fresh sheep carcass which is in Grandpa Clark's field right now.
(Coyote casualty.)
She simply glared at me and stated, "That's disgusting, Mom."
