He sat in our windowsill for months, then resided in the pantry cupboard during Christmas. Recently we brought the jar back out to the kitchen window. I suspected it was certainly dead, but wanted the girls to discover that for themselves.
Imagine our shock when we came home to find a full-sized butterfly in our jar!
Absolutely MAGICAL!
Our new friend will certainly die in the blustery weather outside,
so we will be letting him stay with us for awhile!
Madi read on the internet how to feed a captive butterfly.
(Did you know they TASTE with their feet?)
She mixed up a precise ratio of sugar-water, and taught our butterfly how to drink by using a needle to extend his proboscis onto a Q-tip soaked in sugar water.
ASTOUNDING! Who knew you could do THAT!
(I just might need to purchase fresh flowers every week and call it a home school expense!)
Seriously, this is why you're a great mom and amazing home school teacher. I'd have thrown out the "dead stick" and hoped my kids wouldn't have noticed. We would have completely missed the awe and wonder because I was too impatient to let things unfold in their natural timeline. A lesson for lots of things I suppose.
ReplyDeleteYou don't know me...your husband was one of my husband's mission companions, and they've recently connected! I love reading your blog...your homeschooling adventures, especially with grandpa, are to die for! Thank you for sharing your sweet family spirit with us! And I too would have thrown out the butterfly a LONG time ago.
